Of the 500,000 applications, transportation analyst Noel Perry predicts two-thirds won’t make it past the drug screens and background checks required in some applications. And stricter Docutmentation required of immigrants will remove much of that potential driver pool.
Heavy Duty Trucking Magazine, The MOTHER of all driver shortages, February 2011
Supply and demand tells us the shortage of drivers will lead to increased wages paid to the best drivers to keep good and services moving. Without drivers, trucking companies cannot move their goods so they have little choice but to offer higher pay for the best drivers. The end result is an increase in shipping costs passed to businesses which in turn will increase the cost of goods. How about improving drunk driving laws, texting and driving or eating and driving? DOT is implementing very expensive programs to address a relatively small issue at the ultimate expense of the US consumer.
